SURGICAL
TECHNOLOGY
PROGRAM


 
PURPOSE: The program is designed to prepare students for employment
as surgical technologist. The program meets the requirements of the
Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program
(CAAHEP).
PROGRAM CONTENT: This program is a planned sequence of instruction
consisting of Theory, laboratory and clinical experiences. The following are
the course offerings:
• Introduction to Health Care
• Intro to Surgical Services
• Anatomy and Physiology
• Introduction to Microbiology
• Infection Control
• Inventory Control
• Care of Preoperative Patient
• Surgical Case Management
• Surgical Procedures
• Clinical Rotation
ENTRANCE/CLINICAL NEEDS
• TABE Test Basic Skills Test (see below)
• Background Screening (own expense) effective 3/28/05
• Attend Orientation
• Complete Physical Examination prior to Entrance
• Complete Program Paperwork prior to Entrance
LENGTH OF PROGRAM: 1330 hours approximately 14 months effective
7/1/05.
TIME:
Classroom hours 8:00 AM – 2:30 PM M - F
Clinical hours 6:30 AM – 1:15 PM T - F
UNIFORMS: Students are required to wear the official school Uniform
during the entire program (Class and Clinical).
TRANSPORTATION: Students must provide their own transportation to
and from the campus as well as all clinical settings.
BASIC SKILLS REQUIREMENTS (TABE)
• Math 10.0 A Level
• Language 11.0 A Level
• Reading 11.0 A Level
• Basic skills levels required for awarding a Full Program Completer
Certificate.
LABORATORY ACTIVITIES: In a simulated surgical environment, students
practice preparing, setting up and maintaining a sterile field, sterilization
and disinfecting procedures, preparation of supplies and equipment for
surgery, and patient preparation. The campus skills lab, computer lab and
classroom are utilized for student learning.
CLINICAL ACTIVITIES: Students must provide their own transportation to
the clinical sites. Clinical learning experiences in an operation room and
related areas are an integral part of this program.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE: After successful completion of this
approved program, students are eligible to take the National Certification
Examination for the Surgical Technologist License is not required in the
State of Florida.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES: The number of surgical technologists
employed in Florida in 2006 was 5,439. It is projected that in 2014 there will
be 6,560, an annual average growth rate of 2.6 percent or an annual
increase of ~140 positions With experience and/or further education, surgical
technologists may advance to sales positions with surgical supply companies,
inventory control management, surgical assistants, and surgical nurses.
SALARY: Average salary is $12-$15/hour but varies according to
specialty and experience
