PHLEBOTOMIST

Phlebotomists are specialized clinical support healthcare workers/assistant who collect blood from patients for examination in laboratories, the results of which provide valuable information to diagnosing illness.

Phlebotomists have responsibility to take blood without harming the patient or disturbing the nursing care they are receiving at the time. They also need to ensure the blood is taken correctly, as if specimens are harmed during collection, test results may be unobtainable or worthless. Once the blood is taken phlebotomists are also responsible for transporting the specimen to the correct laboratory as and when required.

The content of The Phlebotomist program here at Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center includes, , performance of safe and efficient work practices in obtaining adequate and correct blood specimens by capillary or venipuncture on adults, children and neonates; maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test to be performed; preparing blood smears; labeling specimens accurately and completely; collecting timed specimens; promoting the comfort and well-being of the patient while performing blood collecting duties; observing safety policies and procedures; medical terminology; delivering a variety of clinical specimens to the clinical laboratory; sorting and recording specimens received in the laboratory; centrifuging specimens and preparing aliquots of samples according to the designated protocol; distributing samples to appropriate laboratory sections; and preparing collection trays for specimen procurement.
