Recommend steps for applying for student financial aid. 

The federal school code for Lindsey Hopkins is 005586.

  1. Apply for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov.  Parents of dependant students may also apply for a PIN. 

  2. Locate your federal income tax return for 2008 or parents of dependant students should locate their federal income return for 2008. 

  3. Complete accurately the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov using your 2008 income tax return. 

  4. Request in step 6 of the FAFSA to have your application sent to Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center by entering federal school code 005586. 

  5. Submit electronically your FAFSA and get a confirmation number.  Print or write down your confirmation number.  You may save your application on-line without submitting the actual application.  If you do not get a confirmation number, you did not submit your application. 

  6. A week after submitting your FAFSA, visit the LHTEC financial aid office (Room D157) to see if your application has been received and if you need to submit other documentation to the LHTEC financial aid office.

There is no financial aid available for Adult Basic Education (ABE) or English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes.

MORE STUDENT FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION

Thank you for your interest in Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center (LHTEC).  Students who are interested in enrolling in career/technical education programs at LHTEC are encouraged to complete a United States Department of Education, Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). There are several different types of financial aid available to students.  In order to be considered for either United States Department Education (USDOE) federal aid or State of Florida aid, a student must first accurately complete the FAFSA for the current award year. 

There are three ways to complete the FAFSA application:  electronically, manually, a combination of electronically and manually.  The application can be completed electronically on the internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  A paper application may also be completed and mailed in for processing.  It takes four to six weeks to process paper applications. 

An application may be complete on-line and the signature pages (FAFSA step 7) printed, signed and mailed in to be processed.  Paper applications may be completed as soon as possible after students or parents of dependant students have filed their federal income tax return. 

The predominate type of student financial aid used at Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center is the United State Department of Education’s Pell Grant.  The Pell Grant is a need-based student financial aid program.  The Pell Grant is a grant, not a loan, and generally does not have to be repaid provided the application (s) submits factual information and attends school. 

There is a limited amount of State of Florida student aid called the Florida Student Assistance Grant (FSAG). Florida state aid can only be used during the fall and winter trimesters.

Signatures & PINs

All applications must be signed by the applicant and by the parents of dependant students in step 7 of the FAFSA.  Electronic applications may be signed with a Personal Identification Number (PIN).  Student and parents of dependant students may apply for an individual PIN at www.pin.ed.gov.  A PIN is an electronic signature that is issued by US ED for financial aid purposes.  The PIN numbers should not be given out or used by anyone other than by the person to whom the PIN was issued. 

Applicants may create a PIN number, or the system will select a number for each applicant.  Students may request to have their PIN number sent to their e-mail account or have the PIN mailed to a home address.  Students are not required to have an e-mail account to get a PIN.  If a student submits an e-mail address, the PIN will be sent to the e-mail address provided.  If a student did not submit an e-mail address, the PIN will be mailed to the physical address submitted on the PIN application.  PIN number should be issued, e-mailed and activated within 48 hours of completing an electronic PIN application.  Students are not required to have an e-mail address to receive and use a PIN.  FAFSAs will not be processed and an EFC will not be generated if the application is not signed.

Income
Students must accurately report their total annual income on their FAFSA.  Dependant students must accurately list their own and the income of their parents or guardian on the FAFSA.  For the 2009-2010 FAFSA, income information should be collected from the 2008 federal income tax return, Social Security income statements AFDC statements, bank account statement and other documents. 

Applicants must accurately complete worksheets A, B, C, and transfer the results to lines 40, 41, 42 and  if the applicant is a dependent student to lines 79 and 80 also. 

All FAFSA applications must be accurate and honest.

School
In order for Lindsey Hopkins to process a student’s FAFSA application, the Lindsey Hopkins’ federal school code of 005586 must be submitted in step 6 of the FAFSA.

Submitting the FAFSA
If a student completes and submits the FAFSA on-line or submits changes on-line a confirmation number and EFC number will be provide within a few minutes of the submission.  We suggest that applicants print out and save the confirmation and EFC page.  If a student has not properly submitted their application electronically a confirmation number will not be generated by the FAFSA website.

Student Aid Report
After a student has completed their FAFSA a Student Aid Report (SAR) will be sent to them from the US ED processor.  If an e-mail is submitted on the application then the SAR will be sent by e-mail to the e-mail address listed on the FAFSA.  If no e-mail address is provided on the FAFSA, the SAR will be mailed to the physical address provided by the student.  We recommend that LHTEC students not provide an e-mail address with their FAFSA.  Students may request a duplicate SAR to be sent to them by calling 1-800-4FD-AID (1-800-433-3243).  Students should keep their SAR for future reference.

Adding Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center to a FAFSA
If a student has completed the FAFSA and has not included Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education in step 6 of the application they will need to add the school’s name to the application.  The simplest way to add LHTEC to an application is to use a PIN to make changes to the application.  Students should go to the FAFSA website, click on  “Make corrections to a processed FAFSA,” go to step 6 and add LHTEC to your application.  The federal school code for Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education is 005586.  If a change is made and properly submitted, you will receive a confirmation number within a few seconds of submission.  Keep the confirmation number.

Renewing your FAFSA application 

A FAFSA application is only good for one award year.  The US DOE award year runs from July 1st to June 30th.  To receive federal (Pell Grant) financial aid, a student must be enrolled during the award year.  If a student or parent of a dependant student are required to file a federal income tax return, we recommend that the tax return be filed with the IRS before completing FAFSA.

For the 2009-2010 award year all students must completely resubmit their FAFSA

Verification
Some applications are selected for verification.  If your application is selected for verification, you will be required to complete the correct verification form and provide proof of income.  Typically this will include submitting a signed copy of your federal income tax return, W2 forms and other documents.  The verification is good for one award year only.

We recommend that the applicant thoroughly read the publication Funding Education Beyond High School.

Loans
Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center does not participate in any type of student loan program.

Attendance
Class attendance is of paramount important for all students of LHTEC
.  Students receive Pell Grants financial aid in proportion to the amount of class time that they attend.  Students who have poor class attendance get less financial assistance. 

The attendance of students who receive financial aid is reviewed each trimester.  If a student has poor attendance the student may be denied additional Pell Grant deferments, or state and local student financial aid.  To ensure the confirmation of financial aid, a student should maintain at least 75 percent class attendance.

Other Aid
If a student does not qualify for the US DOE, Title Iv, Pell Grant, other student financial aid maybe available.  Other student aide may include FE Waiver and the District Financial Aid Program (DFAP).  Both Fee Waiver and DFAP funds are limited in the amount allocated to the school.  We request that accurately complete the FAFSA before requesting other aid. 

Students may receive financial aid from other agencies; programs such as South Florida Workforce (One Stops), Vocational Rehabilitation Services (Voc Rehab) or the SAVES program.

Definitions
Independent students are those who are more than 23 years of age or married. 

Dependent students are those who are less than 23 years of age and single.

Other Information
Students who withdraw from LHTEC before completing a respective, career/technical program my owe LHTEC and M-DCPS for tuition and fees that have been deferred based on their Pell grant and lack of attendance.  Holds will be placed on student accounts, if the student owes LHTEC money.

Student’s Responsibility
Students who receive any type of financial aid including a tuition deferment are required to be contiguously enrolled in career/technical education program at Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center.  It is the student’s responsibility to attend classes.  Failure to attend classes regularly may jeopardize future tuition deferments, access to other financial aid as well as future disbursement of Title IV aid (Pell Grant).  It is the policy of M-DCPS to withdraw career/technical students after the student’s fifth consecutive absence in class.

Other Forms
Students who would like to receive financial aid at Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center must complete the “Postsecondary Institution Technical Center Financial Aid Application” form 5467.  Students should read the paper title, “Registration Information You are required to Know.”  When the student understands the form they should sign the form and return it to the Financial Aid Office.
